As the Hero ISL 2022-23 season approached, Buckingham slowly molding the squad by bringing in some quality foreign payers also while maintaining the core of his squad from last season. After joining very close to the seasons start last season, Islanders head coach Des Buckingham couldn’t quite get the team to play his way.

Although the Islanders performed well in the AFC Champions League campaign, finishing second in the group after winning two matches which was the best performance by any Indian club in the competition.
